Nothing like her. My wife and I became fans in 1974 after we heard her on KJAZ-FM in Alameda (sadly, gone almost 30 years now). We were newly married and living in San Francisco. When Blossom did a gig at a club in S.F. we went and were totally mesmerized. Her pal Bob Dorough played the opening set, and he was marvelous, too. For the transition, Dorough started singing, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and she came on stage and joined in the duet. A sweet memory, bittersweet since my wife died a year ago, but sweet nonetheless.

Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman, divorced in 1950, primarily due to him being known as Mr. Jane Wyman (in terms of Star power terms) rather than Actor Ronald Reagan. **However, what is NOT known as a divorce domino effect was his staring in a Superb 1950 Civil Rights film 'Storm Fear' (filmed in 1948/1949) about a white District Attorney bringing charges against a Southern KKK Town regarding a Murder, starring Ginger Rodgers, Doris Day, and Steve Cochran (playing a redneck). Obviously conservative Jane Wyman was sufficiently angry with Ronnie on choosing that controversial film, that Divorce was a next step. Hence, Ronald Reagan would be invited to the Apollo Theatre at any time, after making that film. That film is as Civil Rights powerful as Stanley Baker's 'Home of the Brave' 1947 film.

I was at this concert at The Empress Hall in 1956. I was 19 at the time and in the middle of my National Service in the RAF. It was a wonderful experience seeing Louis Armstrong and his band in the flesh. I'm 86 now and can't believe it was 67 years ago when I was there. There can't be many people still alive who were lucky enough to see this concert. My Dad got to know Louis Armstrong in 1932 when he visited Great Britain and I still have a wonderful photo of my Dad and Louis and his crew on the beach at Brighton. It was my Dad who arranged a VIP trip from my RAF base in Hereford to see the concert with ringside seats and an introduction to Louis. Have you any more footage from the concert, as I would love to see it if possible. Ronnie Newman

I know this is very late, but just a couple of points about film cameras of that era, 1983 - most cameras of higher quality, with interchangeable lenses as one would want in order to get a good indoor photo, made a pretty loud clack when the shutter fired. It would have been doubtful that they would have been using flash bulbs, rather an electronic flash. Those flashes were bright as lightning and then the unit would make an annoying whine as the strobe reformed and the capacitor recharged. Pretty annoying stuff for a quiet hall and a performer with a small, charming voice and a piano. Of course, that is a pretty big item to be taking into the venue. If it was some moron trying to get a blurry pic with a Kodak Instamatic using a flash cube then they deserved a lot worse than the very brief reprimand they got.

She was a pioneer!

I went to a performance of hers back in about 1984. She corrected someone in the audience for doing something. She didn't allow any service during the show. She had guts and stood up for herself. Before the show, I made the mistake of tipping the waitress $5 to deliver a song request to her. The waitress thought I was sending the $5 tip to Ms Dearie, who of course refused. Blossom Dearie never took song requests. I didn't know that. The waitress returned the $5 to a baffled and embarrassed me. After the show she signed albums and was perfectly nice. Lucky for me she didn't know that I was the guy who sent the song request.

EVERY single TIME I listen. to-this-music - to BD singing... playing... wow - I am just speechless. I think if I were teaching composition- BD's music would be one of my staples - I'd add it in constantly to my study-lessons, etc. That, and Percy Aldridge Grainger - I know, different, but... still Jazz, and lucid regarding harmonization.
